Suspects
Terry looked out the window after her and then turned to Reed.
âSorry about that. It is probably better she is not here. I keep worrying that Iâll slip and say something about Kim and Keith spending time with each other. That would worry her sick.â
âI understand. Did you find anything else out from McManus?â
âA little. Keith and Kim met on Wednesday after school in her car. They talked for a while and he gave something to her but didnât say what it was. Whatever he handed Kim, she reacted by running from the car. Keith chased her part way across the lot but then she stopped and waited for him. They talked for a minute and she returned to her car. The bug under her dashboard couldnât catch their conversation outside, so we donât know what they talked about or what he gave her.â
Reedâs secret meeting with Terryâs daughter Thursday morning and knowledge of the bag of cutting instruments stabbed at him as painful as any knife could, but he steeled himself to hold that information in confidence until he knew more. He shifted the conversation to the investigation in Marissaâs hometown.
âSo, what have the police found out in Gig Harbor? What did the Archerâs have to say?â
âMrs. Archer is devastated. The last time she saw Marissa was Friday evening. She was still in bed on Saturday morning when her daughter went out. She thought Marissa was just out for the day.â
âAnd Mr. Archer?â
âThe last time he saw her was Saturday morning. She told him that she was going out for the day and evening but didnât say where. It was typical for her to stay out late and it wasnât until he checked her room Sunday morning and saw that she hadnât returned home that he began to worry. When the police called on Sunday and told him they may have found his daughter in West Seattle, he suspected she had gone over to see Keith.â
Reed remembered what Keith had told Kim about not having talked to Marissa in days. Terry had mentioned the same thing from the original police report.
Reed interrupted, âDidnât you tell me that Keith told the police he hadnât talked with Marissa that weekend. Maybe she didnât go to Seattle to see Keith. She could have been seeing someone else.â
âExcept he was lying about talking with her. His cell phone records show that he called Marissaâs cell Saturday around 8:30 am. The investigators are going to have another talk with him tomorrow.â
Now Reedâs belief in Keithâs innocence was beginning to erode. Keith had lied to both the police and Kim about talking with Marissa on Saturday. Why would he lie if he was innocent? Maybe he had lied to Kim about the cutting tools too.
Terry finished up, âOther than that, they really donât have anything. There are no leads anywhere other than Keith and there is no hard evidence to connect him to Marissaâs death. His talking with her Saturday morning is certainly no crime.â
Reed felt sick to his stomach.
